Healthy Heart
Q.
My father has a history of heart problems. Unfortunately his GP told us that he may require a bypass operation in the near future. The doctor has also said, that due to family genetics, I too may experience cardiovascular problems later in life. I am 37 years of age with no history of ill health. My cholesterol levels are normal but I am a little overweight. What can I do to help myself?

With all areas of health, it is paramount to establish the strengths and weaknesses of the individual. With this knowledge, your goal, should be to minimize your genetic weaknesses and enhance the potential of your health.
One of the major factors which can weaken your cardiovascular system is elevated homocysteine. Homocysteine is produced naturally within the body as a component of metabolism (energy production). However when there is a deficiency of the correct nutrients, levels can become elevated. It is increased levels that can pose a risk to your hearts.
A homocysteine test is £80 and only requires a pin prick of blood. If levels are elevated, don’t panic, as they can be reduced by a homocysteine specific supplementation programme and dietary amendments.
To help to reduce your excess weight, check with your doctor, then establish an exercise programme, something that you can maintain longterm and put the recommended dietary changes in place for heart health.
Also It is very important that you manage stress appropriately. Emotional stress is risk factor in all illness. But in relation to the heart, stress actually causes blood to clot faster and makes the arteries constrict. Stress management should therefore be as important as any dietary changes. Techniques I would recomend include:
Remember just a few minutes a day can make a difference.
